Premature ejaculation is a condition faced by men causing them to ejaculate quickly when engaging in sexual activity. According to Masters and Johnson, premature ejaculation is defined as the condition in which a man ejaculates before his sex partner can achieve an orgasm, in over fifty percent of their sexual encounters. Although there is no official limit, if ejaculation occurs within two minutes of penetration, it can be termed as a case of premature ejaculation. There are two types of premature ejaculation: Primary, from the time a male attains puberty, and Secondary, acquired over time in a man’s life.

Premature ejaculation can be caused due to potential psychological, environmental, or physical factors, or a combination of them. The most common cause of premature ejaculation is psychological factors, which can be due to an overall lack of emotional health, depression, stress, performance anxiety, sexual repression in the past, and/or a lack of confidence overall. Sometimes premature ejaculation can also result from a lack of communication between a man and his partner, which could create emotional conflict or feelings of hurt which can impede the feeling of intimacy normally required for a comfortable and healthy sex life.
Certain neurological conditions can also contribute to sexual dysfunction among men, causing premature ejaculation. In some cases, men experience premature ejaculation during extreme and uncontrollable arousal situations. Recent studies reveal that premature ejaculation could be a genetic condition handed down the generations by family members who have also had the same experience. Premature ejaculation can also be caused by external, controllable factors like consuming too much alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, caffeine or eating excessive amounts of fatty foods and red meats.
Premature ejaculation can be controlled through a conditioning of the mind, and simple techniques like stop and start, or regulating breathing during sexual activity. Other methods that can help prevent premature ejaculation include exercising the penile and pelvic muscles for developing their strength to hold erections for longer duration, experimenting with different positions during sexual intercourse that help reduce the strain on the penis, as well as pressing down on the tip of the penis just before the need to orgasm to block ejaculation. Certain sprays, creams and condoms contain a mild anesthetic agent that helps desensitize the tip of the penis and allows men to delay ejaculation by this method.
In extreme conditions, men may require counseling or behavioral therapy to reduce the anxiety experienced due to premature ejaculation to help them overcome the issue. Medical methods involve prescription of a few kinds of antidepressant medicines like Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft, to treat premature ejaculation. These selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have a side effect of inhibiting orgasm which can help delay ejaculation.
Another treatment method for premature ejaculation, called intracavernous pharmacotherapy, involves the injection of a drug known as a vasodilator directly into the penis. This method has recorded a success rate of over seventy percent among test patients and is used by companies like Florida Men’s Medical Clinic, Boston Medical Group etc.
